The Great Experiment
In the beginning there was the nation, and it was without form until the fathers constituted it.
The spirit of freedom moved upon the face of the nation. The fathers said let there be light. And they saw the light and said it was good.
But they divided the light from the dark. and they said this was heaven.
God said to go forth and multiply the riches. And god said this was good.
The dark was to toil so the light could reap from the garden while the lord rested. But the garden had a rose and a thorn. And there lay the serpent and the serpent implored them to eat from the tree of knowledge for then their eyes would be opened. Some did eat from the tree of knowledge and their eyes were opened. They saw that the light and dark should not be divided. And they called to their fathers for they saw they were naked.
Those who had eaten of the knowledge looked up to the nation and behold it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted the ways upon the nation. And they said unto Lincoln rise-up to be our leader for the nation is filled with violence through this division and behold we shall destroy this division and light shall be with dark as brothers.
And Lincoln raised a great host and brought the flood of blood and carnage. He established his covenant that everyone who comes unto him and keeps them free. He sailed his nation upon this flood of blood and carnage, and they rode on the face of this flood for four long years. He sent forth avenging Sherman to see that the flood was abated. And still he waited for the flood to recede. He then sent Grant who returned with a branch of olive.
And so the covenant was rewritten so that all men who were created equal were. That the dark and the light should live together in equality. That nobody should be below or above the law.
